Why AI tools cannot hand you a faithful vector

Image generators produce pixels, not paths: OpenAI's image API, for example, returns PNG by default, or JPEG or WebP on request[1]. Chat assistants can write SVG code, but code written from a description of your image is a new drawing of it, made of shapes the assistant chose, so it can look right at a glance and differ when you put it next to the original. Neither follows the actual edges in your file, which is what a cutting machine, a laser or a print shop needs.

Turning an AI-generated image into an SVG

  • Download the image from your AI tool, as PNG if it offers a choice.
  • Drop it into Vectorize.tools. Flat, logo-style images trace best; the Logo preset suits most of them.
  • Set Colours to the number of colours in the design, check the preview, and download the SVG.
  • If the image has a busy background, remove it first with Clipout and trace the transparent PNG.

Ask the AI for traceable images

When you generate artwork you plan to vectorize, ask for a flat vector-style illustration with a limited palette, solid colours, no gradients or textures, and a plain white background. Those images trace into clean SVGs with few paths.
