Image to SVG for laser cutting and engraving

Lasers follow paths, so a logo or a sketch has to become a vector before it can be cut or scored. Drop the image into the converter, start from the Drawing preset for clean single-colour outlines, and import the SVG into LightBurn, Glowforge or xTool Creative Space, which all take SVG files[1][2][3][4].

Cut, score or engrave

The SVG contains filled shapes. Engraving a filled shape is right for a logo burned into wood. To cut a shape out or score its outline instead, select it in your laser software and set the operation to cut or score; the laser then follows the shape's edge.

Settings that cut well

  • Drawing preset: one colour, traced with Potrace for smooth curves with few nodes, which means smoother, faster laser moves.
  • Lower Detail removes specks that would otherwise become tiny holes or burn marks.
  • Higher Smoothing turns wobbly hand-drawn lines into flowing curves.
  • Even out lighting helps with a phone photo of a drawing on paper that has shadows across it.

Photos on a laser

Photo engraving works from the photo itself and does not need a vector. Vectorize a photo when you want a graphic, stencil-like look: the Photo preset with 2 to 4 colours, or black and white mode, gives bold shapes that engrave with high contrast.

Which laser programs accept these SVGs?

LightBurn[1][2], Glowforge[3] and xTool Creative Space[4] all import SVG files.

Why does my laser engrave instead of cutting?

Because the shapes are filled and the job is set to engrave. Select them in your laser software and set the operation to cut or score.
