Why Cut out layers matter

Most tracers stack shapes: a big background shape with smaller ones on top. On screen that looks right, but a cutting machine cuts every layer in full, so you waste vinyl under the top colours and get bumps where layers overlap. Layers set to Cut out (the Cut file preset) makes each colour area its own non-overlapping piece, which is what layered vinyl, paper crafts and iron-on need.

Cricut Design Space

  • Download the SVG and choose Upload in Design Space, then pick the file. Design Space takes SVG files as vector images[1].
  • With Layers set to Cut out, each colour is a separate area, ready to cut in its own material.
  • Resize the whole design in Design Space before cutting; the SVG scales without losing sharpness.
  • For a single-colour decal, use the Drawing preset: one colour, one layer.

Silhouette Studio

Silhouette lists SVG import among the features of Silhouette Studio Business Edition[2]. Without it, download the PNG export at a large size and use Silhouette's own trace, which works well on the clean, flat PNG this tool makes.

Questions

How many colours should a cut file have?

As few as the design allows: every colour is another material to cut and layer. Start with the Cut file preset (4 colours) and change Colours to match your design.

Do the SVGs work with Brother ScanNCut?

Brother lists SVG among the file formats CanvasWorkspace can use[3][4]. Use the Cut file preset for layered designs, or the Drawing preset for a single colour.
